New York: day 2

90_DSCN0032_mia

I’m super happy to start writing about my day 2 story in New York. It began in Battery Park, in the early morning, where we took our breakfast at Starbucks and went for a walk. Not very special you said? In Italy Starbucks doesn’t exist, so yeah it was superspecial for us, also cause we took pumpkin desserts, as we all go crazy for pumpkins!

From Battery Park we took the vessel to Liberty Island. Let me stop the story for a moment to give you a couple advices. First of all if you’re planning a trip to New York buy a New York CityPass, you’ll save money on entrances to the most important attractions and skip the cue. The Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island museum are two of these acctractions, and now I’m gonna tell you everytime I used my pass to get inside something. Second advice: jump on the first vessel to Liberty Island, the less is the people, the more you’re going to enjoy your visit. Also later vessel will get superfull and if you have some seasickness like I do, this will not help (later on the tale for this). Now let’s go back to the narration. The view from the vessel was spectacular even with the strong wind you see in pictures. Little by little we were getting closer to Liberty Island and all seemed like a movie to me.

Once we disembarked on Liberty Island the film actually became reality. That statue I saw in a ton of movies and photos was actually in front of me, and God if she’s beautiful! This was also the first of different times we watched the skyline of New York, which actually gave me gooseflesh. We didn’t go up on the statue as you have to book like 9 months earlier to have a ticket, maybe next time Lady Liberty, wait for me 😉

After taking a bilion photos we took the vessel again, this time for Ellis Island. This time the more we get close to the island the more it looked tremendously creepy to me. Much more similar to an unhappy place than to the place of hope it should have been for the immigrants that were coming to the US.

We went visiting the museum that was very interesting not only for the story of the island, but also for all the testimonies of italian immigrates, because in Italy everyone of us had heard about some relatives that left everything and went searching for a better life in America.

After we get out it was time to get back on dry land. We were late for the vessel, the upper level was already full and so were the sittings in the lower one, we were standing in the middle crammed in like sardines. My only way to keep standing was never leave my sister’s arm. Uh, did I ever tell you I’m claustrophobic? So with no air to breathe seasickness was getting worse and my head was turning like mad. The travel looked like 5 months long to me. Anyway my head had turned around all day long, so if you have seasickness guys take the vessel after, really. Once back in Battery Park we went touching the Charging Bull, as every turist do. It was full of people so we had to argue to take our photos but in the end we’ve made it!

Then we took a sandwich at Subway and went eating it on the benches at Bowling Green, the oldest public park in New York with a great view on the Beekman Tower.

Next on the list: Brooklyn Bridge. Or how I call it right now: The Never Ending Bridge. It looks like a hundred km long when it’s super hot and sunny! (You can see me half dead on a bench ahah!) Anyway it’s beautiful and walking through it is something you cannot miss on your visit to New York. The view is, again, spectacular.

Prossimo sulla lista: il ponte di Brooklyn. O come lo chiamo io: The Never Ending Bridge. Sembra lungo cento km quando c’è caldissimo e soleggiato!

We went then for a little walk around Brooklyn close to the Bridge, to Pier 1 to see the skyline and to Manhattan Bridge to take finally the metro. It’s crazy because Brooklyn looks completely different from New York, it’s much more similar to an italian city in the architecture, but with the american mood in the air, people look way more relaxed than in New York and the traffic is quite less.

Our last stop-over of the day was my actual favorite place in New York: Rockfeller Center. The mall with shops and restaurants to dine inn it’s exactly the place where I’d probably be spending a lot of my day off if I was living in New York. It looks exactly like the collective imagination of New York and I get lost in my mind dreaming about a life there. We went to the ticket office where we printed our tickets included in the New York CityPass for the Top Of The Rock observatory. After taking a fruity ice tea at Starbucks to restore liquids we went up on GE Building. The elevator too was crazy: super rapid and with a lot of lights, it was like being on an attraction in an amusement park. Once up the view was breathtaking, we were seeing for the first time many things we only watched on tv: Empire State Building, Central Park, Chrysler Building and Times Square’s Ball. We planned to stay up quite a lot to see New York in the sun, during sunset and in the night, for a show of lights that you can see just once a year. Only on 11/9 the lights of the Empire take the colors of the US flag in memory of the victims. I wasn’t actually in my best (remember the head turning thing?), so I looked for the right spot to sit and not only watch the panorama, but also do one of my favorite things (that could sound a little creepy): watch people, imagine their stories and travel into different worlds in my mind.

When we get back down we went for an hamburger in the Summer Garden & Bar, close to the superfamous fountain and where during winter you can ice skate. I can’t say this was the best hamburger I’ve eaten in New York, but surely the most expensive. Anyway we’ve enjoyed it for the view. After that we went for a little walk to take the metro close to Radio City Music Hall (did I ever told you I’m James Bay’s biggest fan?) and get back to the hotel. So this is the end of a looong post about a super full day! Did you liked it? Have you ever been in these places? Stay tuned for day 3!

I was wearing:

Ebay earring | Zara tank | United Colors Of Benetton skirt | H&M bag | Converse All Star Sneakers | The North Face jacket
