We’re back with this column I love so much! Thanks to this guide I’m making for you on sundays I force myself to get out of my house and enjoy the beauty that sorrounds me! Today we take the car and we drive till the border between the provences of Parma and Piacenza, we go up on the hills and we reach Scipione Castello.
Scipione Castello is a Medival village and it encloses in the middle the Scipione Castle. The castle was built by Adalberto Pallavicino in 1025 on the top of the villa of Roman Consul Scipione Calvo, this is the reason of the name of the castle. The position was important not only because from here they could see the entire valley, but also cause it was on the top of the Via del Sale, the route where salt reservoir were. During the years the Pallavicino family became proprietor of these recervoirs and they also opened new ones, for this reason they became very rich and powerful. The castle was often attacked during the XV century and, due to the damages, it was rebuilt in 1447 by Lodovico and Giovanni Pallavicino who added the tower and created a deeper moat. During the XVII century it was transformed again to became more elegant, adding details like the arcade. Before the First World War, Clelia d’Aragona donated the castle to the National Charity for War Orphans and they used it like a camp for this children during the war. During the Second World War it became a concentration camp were prisoners were left before being deported to Nazist Lager in Germany. Finally, in 1969 the castle was bought by Count Von Holstein, husband of Maria Luisa Pallavicino, as a gift for her wife. Since then it was refurbished and it was open to the public again in 2008.

Oggi prendiamo la macchina e andiamo fino al confine tra le province di Parma e Piacenza, saliamo sulle colline e raggiungiamo Scipione Castello.
Scipione Castello è un borgo medievale che circonda il Castello di Scipione. Il Castello fu costruito da Adalberto Pallavicino nel 1025 sulla villa del console romano Scipione Calvo, da qui appunto il nome del castello. La posizione è importante non solo perchè da qui potevano vedere tutta la vallata, ma anche perchè si trovava sulla Via del Sale, la via su cui si trovavano i pozzi di sale. Attraverso gli anni la famiglia Pallavicino divenne proprietaria di questi pozzi e ne aprì di nuovi, per questa ragione si arricchirono moltissimo e guadagnarono potere. Il castello fu spesso attaccato nel XV secolo e, per via dei danni, fu ricostruito nel 1447 da Lodovico e Giovanni Pallavicino che aggiunsero la torre e crearono un fossato più profondo. Durante il XVII secolo fu modificato di nuovo per diventare più elegante, aggiungendo dettagli come il loggiato. Prima della Prima Guerra Mondiale, Clelia d’Aragona donò il castello all’Opera Nazionale per gli Orfani di Guerra e lo usarono come colonia appunto durante questa guerra per i bambini. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale divenne un campo di concentramento dove i prigioneri venivano lasciati prima della deportazione nei Lager nazisti in Germania. Infine, nel 1969 il castello fu acquistato dal Conte Von Holstein, marito di Maria Luisa Pallavicino, come regalo per la moglie. Da allora viene ristrutturato e fu riaperto al pubblico di nuovo nel 2008.
