Milano diary

An habit I used to have before Covid was to escape to Milan every now an then, to eat somewhere I’d like, do some shopping and just enjoy the vibe of the city. Actually I was there the Sunday before Lombardy was closed and put in red zone and we all couldn’t actually understand how much in danger we were. I was lucky let’s honestly say it. With a little more than an hour driving from where I live, I’m in San Donato and after living there the car for a few euros you take the metro and you’re in the city centre. And from February 2020 till the end of May 2021 I didn’t went back to this city I love. When I went back, I’ve actually decided to book a room there and stay for a few days, just to make up the missed visits. Here is a little diary of my adventure there, really random as really I don’t remember in which day we have done what, but here are my comfort places!

Un’abitudine che avevo prima del Covid era di fuggire ogni tanto a Milano, per mangiare in qualche posto che mi piace, fare un po’ di shopping e semplicemente godermi la città. A dir la verità mi trovavo lì proprio la domenica prima che chiudessero la Lombardia e diventasse zona rossa e nessuno di noi sapeva che pericolo stavamo correndo. Sono stata fortunata, diciamocelo. Con poco più di un’ora di guida da dove vivo sono in San Donato e dopo aver lasciato lì la macchina per qualche euro si prende la metro e si arriva in centro città. E da febbraio 2020 fino alla fine di maggio 2021 non sono tornata in questa città che amo. Quando sono tornata ho deciso di prenotare una camera e rimanere per qualche giorno, per recuperare i giri persi. Qui c’è un po’ di diario di quell’avventura, molto random perchè non ricordo in che giorno abbiamo fatto cosa, ma qui c’è ciò che amo fare!

• Giardino delle Culture

A park with a very few plants actually, it’s an urban area riqualified by these two giant graffitis. It’s pretty peaceful, you’ll find there families, school groups, university students with their laptops and instagrammer trying to take the best shot. It’s also the best place to sit and eat something you’ve bought at Knam that it’s a few steps away.

Un giardino con poche piante effettivamente, un’area urbana riqualificata grazie a questi due giganteschi graffiti. E’ un posto molto tranquillo dove potete trovare famiglie, gruppi scolastici, studenti universitari con i loro computer e instagrammer intenti a cercare di ottenere la foto perfetta. E’ anche il posto perfetto per sedersi e mangiare qualcosa comprato da Knam che è a due passi da lì.

• Osaka

A true japanese restaurant in Moscova. Forget sushi all you can eat here and prepare yourself to dive into typical japanese cuisine à la carte. Since I wanted to try every single thing on the menu I finally went for a bento box where I’ve tasted many different things, all delicious.

Un vero ristorante giapponese a Moscova. Dimenticate i sushi all you can eat qui e preparatevi ad immergervi nella vera cucina tipica giapponese. Siccome volevo qualsiasi cosa sul menù ho optato per un bento box così ho potuto assaggiare un po’ di tutto, delizioso.

• Cenacolo Vinciano

Despite many times I’ve been in this city this was the first time I was able to see the Ultima Cena. I’ve reserved our spots waaaay in advance, if I remember correctly even before the hotel. It has always been with reservation as the number of people allowed in the room it’s restricted and with Covid it became even more. It was moving to finally see this masterpiece of Leonardo Da Vinci I’ve heard so much about.

Nonostante tutte le volte che sono stata in città questa è la prima volta in cui sono riuscita a vedere l’Ultima Cena. Ho prenotato il nostro accesso con laaaargo anticipo, anche prima dell’hotel se ricordo correttamente. E’ sempre stato su prenotazione, poichè il numero di persone ammesse all’interno della stanza è ristretto e lo è diventato ancor di più col Covid. E’ stato emozionante vedere finalmente dal vivo questo capolavoro di cui ho tanto studiato e sentito.

• Bosco Verticale

Questi edifici residenziali dello Studio Boeri sono sempre un piacere da vedere.

• California Bakery

There are many California Bakery aroud the city, we stopped at the one in City Life for a coffee break. It’s the place to go if you want some american dessert, like we did with a brownie and pancakes.

Ci sono svariati California Bakery in giro per la città, noi ci siamo fermate in quello di City Life per una merenda. E’ il posto in cui andare per dei dolci americani, come abbiamo fatto noi con un brownie e i pancake.

• City Life

A round of shopping (read Sephora) and a look at the skyscrapers cause you know, I love them.

Un giro di shopping (leggete Sephora) e uno sguardo ai grattacieli perchè lo sapete, li adoro.

• Porta Venezia Metro Station

If you pass by Porta Venezia metro station (maybe to go to Natural History museum or Giardini Idro Montanelli) you cannot go away without a photo to the LGBT+ decoration.

Se passate da Porta Venezia (esempio per il museo di Storia Naturale o i Giardini Idro Montanelli) con la metro, una foto alla colorazione LGBT+ non può mancare.

• Starbucks Reserve Roastery Milano

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that when I step outside of Italy my breakfast is Starbucks. I was quite skeptical about its ‘Italian version’, but in the end we went, and oh boy! Why I didn’t came here before?! It’s the perfect mix between the italian taste and the US vibe. I LOVE it. And yes we went back again cause we loved it way too much!

Se siete qui da un po’ sapete che nel momento in cui esco dai confini italiani la mia colazione è Starbucks. Ero abbastanza scettica sulla sua ‘versione italiana’, ma alla fine ci siamo andate e ommioddio! Perchè non ci sono andata prima?! E’ il mix perfetto tra il gusto italiano e il vibe statunitense. Lo ADORO. E sì i ci siamo tornati perchè ci piaceva troppo.

• Crazy billboards

• Duomo di Milano

I always say ‘You haven’t been in Milan if you don’t take a picture with the Duomo’. If this city has a symbol there it is. If you’d like you can also go inside and up on the steeples (all by stairs or the first part with the elevator and just for the end stairs). An advice as a friend and not as travel blogger: avoid if you are afraid of heights. I’ve tried because, you know me, I wanted to take cool pictures, but I felt so unsafe and I was scared all the time. Luckily Ila was with me!

Dico sempre ‘Non sei stato davvero a Milano se non fai una foto col Duomo’. Se questa città ha un simbolo, eccolo qui. Se vi va potete anche entrare e salire sulle guglie (o solo via scale o una prima parte con l’ascensore e poi scale). Un consiglio da amica e non travel blogger: evitate se avete paura delle altezze. Ho provato perchè, mi conoscete, voglio fare belle foto, ma mi sono sentita sempre in pericolo e ho avuto paura tutto il tempo. Per fortuna c’era l’Ila con me!

• Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

A beautiful liberty architecture that links the Duomo to Teatro alla Scala. Inside you have designer shops with beautiful windows and cool restaurants, Cracco to make a name. Don’t forget to turn your heel three times on the bull balls, it brings luck!

Una bellissima architettura liberty che collega il Duomo col Teatro alla Scala. All’interno shop di brand d’alta moda con bellissime vetrine e ristoranti di spessore, Cracco per fare un nome. Non dimenticate di girare il tacco tre volte sulle palle del toro, porta fortuna!

• Hiromi

Japanese bakery that serves both typical japanese desserts and beverage and some fusion one with italian classic bakey.

Pasticceria giapponese che propone sia dolci e bevande tipici giapponesi e alcuni fusion con la pasticceria tipica italiana.

• Piazza Gae Aulenti

Beautiful metropolitan venue, mostly by night!

Splendido spazio metropolitano, soprattutto la sera!

•  Torre Velasca

The first big tower of Milan, we went to take some urban street photo, unfortunately we didn’t know about the works.

La prima grande torre di Milano, ci siamo andate per scattare qualche foto urbana, purtroppo non ci aspettavamo i lavori in corso.

• Via Abramo Lincoln

This one of the most beautiful streets in Milan. Every hous is in a different pastel color and they create a pastel rainbow, like a small Notting Hill in Milan.

E’ una delle vie più belle di Milano. Ogni casa è colorata in una diversa tonalità pastello, creando un arcobaleno pastello, come una piccola Notting Hill a Milano.

Bonus advice: If your times are restricted always check if there’s a viability variation during your stay, for example we had the Giro D’Italia dividing the city in two.

Consiglio bonus: se avete tempi stretti controllate sempre se ci sono modifiche alla viabilità durante il vostro soggiorno, per esempio noi avevamo il Giro D’Italia che ha diviso la città in due.

• Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

It’s called the ‘Cappella Sistina of Milan’ and once you get to see you understand why. Perfectly decorated in every detail, you’ll discover the secrets behind it thank to Touring Club volunteers that will guide you during the visit (for free!).

E’ chiamata la ‘Cappella Sistina di Milano’ e una che la vedrete capirete il perchè. Perfettamente decorata in ogni dettaglio, ne scoprirete i segreti grazie ai volontari del Touring Club che vi guideranno nella visita (gratis!).

• Navigli

My favorite spot to have a walk in Milan (when it’s not supercrowded!), you know I’m an earth sign, but I desperately love water.

Il mio posto preferito per una passeggiata a Milano (quando non sono superaffollati!), sapete sono un segno di terra, ma amo disperatamente l’acqua.

• Maoji Mini

We’re passionate of food we can’t easily find where we live, so we went at Maoji Mini to try Baos and many other chinese plates.

Siamo appassionati di cibi che non possiamo trovare facilmente dove viviamo, quindi siamo andati da Maoji Mini per provare i Bao e molti altri piatti tipici cinesi.

• Pinacoteca di Brera

The most important art museum in Milan where you can find modern and antique piece of art. If I have to tell you a couple of famous names I’d say the Cristo Morto by Mantegna and the Kiss by Hayez.

Il più importante museo d’arte a Milano dove trovate capolavori sia d’arte antica che moderna. Se devo darvi un paio di nomi famosi direi il Cristo Morto del Mantegna e il Bacio di Hayez.

• Via Montenapoleone

If you’re looking for to buy something from the most high hand brands in fashion, this is the place. I personally prefer to buy them online when they are on sale eheh, but I love looking at the shop windows!

Se quello che volete è comprare qualcosa dai brand più importanti del mondo della moda, siete nel posto giusto. Personalmente preferisco comprarli online e quando sono in saldo eheh, ma amo guardare le vetrine!

• Aparthotel Casa Mia

Nice place to stay in, apartaments are nice, modern, well decorated and with everything you may need. The only things I have to say is that they weren’t clear about where was the affiliated parking lot and we ended up in the wrong one spending a crazy amount of money, also the key service was nonexistent, we made everything buy ourselves despite the guy we met at the reception at our arrival gave us his number and claimed to be present anytime. Anyway nothing bad happened.

Posto carino in cui stare, gli appartamenti sono carini, moderni, ben arredati e con ogni cosa possiate aver bisogno. Devo però fare un paio di critiche, non sono stati chiari circa la location del parcheggio convenzionato e siamo finiti in quello sbagliato, spendendo una cifra assurda, inoltre il servizio di chiavi è stato inesistente e abbiamo fatto tutto da soli, nonostante il ragazzo che abbiamo incontrato alla reception all’arrivo ci abbia dato il suo numero e ci abbia detto che sarebbe stato presente in qualsiasi momento. Comunque non è successo niente di brutto.

• Seoul

Authentic Korean restaurant, in the heart of Milano, I can still feel how good it was and honestly can’t wait to be back. Furthermore the staff was really kind and welcoming.

Autentico ristorante coreano nel cuore di Milano, riesco ancora a sentire il sapore per quanto buone erano le pietanze e non vedo l’ora di tornarci. In aggiunta il personale è supergentile e amichevole.

• Poke House

My absolute favorite franchising of pokes, I’ve discovered it in Milanp and now I’ll go there in every city possible (they opened in mine too!). Here you can combine al the ingredients to make the poke of your dreams and end your meal with a frozen mochi!

La mia catena di poke preferita in assoluto, l’ho scoperta a Milano e ora la cerco in ogni dove (hanno aperto anche nella mia città!). Qui potete combinare tutti gli ingredienti per creare la bowl dei vostri sogni e finire il pasto con un mochi gelato!

• Serendib

Ceylonese Michelin starred restaurant. But don’t think it would be superexpensive, we took a tasting menu for a few euros and we tried the most delicious plates from a kitchen we’ve never eaten before.

Ristorante cingalese con la stella Michelin. Non pensate però che per questo sia supercostoso, abbiamo preso un menù degustazione per pochi euro e abbiamo provato specialità deliziose di una cucina che non avevamo mai assaggiato.

• Rinascente

My go to place in Milan to lose a day looking around all the things you can find inside there. In the end I find myself buying books and food as you can see in the photo. If you are passionate about designer wear here you’ll find the best of the best.

Il mio posto d’eccellenza a Milano per perdere una giornata intera a guardarmi intorno. Alla fine mi ritrovo come sempre ad acquistare libri e cibo come si vede in foto. Se siete appassionati di abbigliamento di marca, qui troverete il meglio.
